This comprehensive program is particularly designed to help the participants start their own business in jewelry making through acquiring the knowledge and practice of the two sides of jewelry making business; to be able to start their own profitable business. The program will introduce the attendees to jewelry making and design as well as the first stages of planning and implementing their new business.
Technical knowledge of manipulating metal with hammer; also, saw, file and basics of soldering will be covered. Surface decoration and pattern making will be explored as well as the fundamentals of composition for creating a collection of jewelry. Students will get acquainted with the market of metals, tools, semi worked items, beads, stones and pearls. Assemblage will be an important aspect in combining stones, pearls and handmade metal parts with chains and closures. Drawing, concepts of design and prototyping will be integrated throughout the program.
In addition to the technical side of jewelry making, participants will practice the steps of starting jewelry making business whilst taking decisions that are based on sound financial and market information.

Jewelry Making Modules
- History of Jewelry and Introduction to Handcraft skills
A comprehensive introduction to the history of jewelry and the social implications of adornment. Through presentations, readings and discussions we will discuss what was, is and could be jewelry. Ultimately settling for a longer period of time on the Islamic and Pharaonic periods with a field trip to the Egyptian Museum.
Students will be introduced to foundational handcraft and jewelry making skills, and will summate in their first pieces of the course. These pendants and their patterns will be the base for the remainder of the program, working and changing them along the way as students build skills and knowledge.

2.Patterns and Repetitions
What is form and what are patterns? How does repetition and pattern change form? Students will work with the patterns used in making their pendants (from module 1) to study and apply ideas of repetition, pattern and form. Wax work will be introduced as a vital material and technique in fashion jewelry. The re-imagined designs from initial sawing and piercing patterns will become the working elements for the remainder of the course. Students will make a necklace from their newly designed patterned element, casted wax pieces, and jump-ring chains.

3. Design Drawing
Sketching and rendering are two vital pillars in all design. Students will learn how sketching can be used to flesh out a quick idea, create iterations of a piece- starting with an element or form and building upon it. The skills of drawing and rendering are not only beneficial to the designer/maker, but most importantly to communicate and think through an idea or concept before diving into the materials for the piece.

4. Concept to Design: Building a Collection
An in-depth research of understand design and concept. Presentation on collections- how are they made from beginning elements and forms, ideas and inspirations. Building a library- organizing what are my elements, forms, themes, and end goal (five finished pieces for this course.) Drawing and prototype model making in paper and samples of the materials students have collected to see possibilities for pieces. Selecting- making the final drawing and model for each piece before proceeding to making.
Final outcome- to design a five piece collection using the hand-made, re-imagined element, casted patterns and samples, found materials from Khan, hand-made chains, casted pieces, closures and findings. For each finished piece in the collection, students will be required to make five variations in drawing for a more expanded version of the collection. A write up for each piece would include description of techniques used, cost of the making, ideas on how the production in a bigger number could be done, and notions about time- how long the process would take from design to making.

To create a new successful business, it is about the idea, technical knowledge and how you think. Through this module, participants will be introduced to tools to refine their idea and re-frame their thinking in order to maximize their chances for success. By the end of the module, participants will be able to operate effectively within the new framework or model for starting a business thus increasing their chances for success

2. Business Modeling and planning
This module will introduce the participants to business modeling and planning techniques that summarize assumptions about what value they will offer, to whom, and how they will make profits. They will also understand how to use these validated assumptions to generate financial projections that are based on actual resources and efforts exerted.

Through this module, participants will understand how to brand, market and grow their business using different tools including the social media. They will also learn successful tips from real business owners.
